Natural Remedies for Rosacea

What is Rosacea?

According to the Mayo Clinic, rosacea (roe-ZAY-she-uh) is a facial skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels and typically affects women over 30 with light complexions. Rosacea is not caused by poor hygiene; in fact, scrubbing and over-washing the skin can irritate it further.

Rosacea is a chronic problem for more than 15 million Americans. According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, the condition can present differently, depending on the subtype: from redness and flushing, to visible blood vessels, swelling, breakouts, bumpy skin, and it can even affect the eyes.

Some dermatologists believe that a proliferation of skin mites may be the cause for many sufferers. According to the National Rosacea Society, those with rosacea have 18 times more demodex mites than those without rosacea.

For many rosacea patients, flare-ups occur when the consume hot drinks, spicy food, and alcohol; experience extreme hot or cold temperatures; exercise vigorously; or use certain cosmetic products like peels or other harsh treatments. Even some store-bought so-called treatments for sensitive skin have been shown to irritate the skin of rosacea sufferers.

Consequently, turning to more natural treatments may be one way to combat the problem. Burdock, aloe, chamomile, coconut oil, green tea, lavender, oats, honey, and turmeric have all been shown to help. Some rosacea forum users have recommended  a 4% solution of tea tree oil, applied daily.
