The smoothie bowl is a brilliant and delicious way to add fresh fruits and superfoods to your breakfast routine. It’s pretty simple, too. You just start by blending your smoothie base, like you would regular smoothie. It doesn’t have to be what’s described in this recipe; it can be whatever fruit combo you like or have on hand. Ideally, you’re looking for a yogurt-like final consistency.
Start with frozen berries and bananas and add a nut butter for thickness and protein; use a non-dairy liquid to help everything blend. A powerful blender won’t require as much liquid. If you’re using protein powder instead, you may need to add a little extra liquid. And, don’t fret if you think you’re not getting enough protein. Hemp seeds are a complete source of protein, providing all nine essential amino acids; plus, the almond butter, oats, cacao nibs and any other seeds or nuts you add will be enough to power you through the morning.
Blend the base ingredients and pour the mixture into a bowl; add your toppings; enjoy!
Base
- ½ frozen banana
- ½ cup frozen blueberries
- ½ cup frozen strawberries
- 1/4 cup raw oats (optional, for added thickness)
- ¼ - ½ cup almond milk (or other nondairy milk) or water
- 1 tablespoon almond butter
- Toppings: raw cacao, raw hemp seeds, granola, acai berry, sliced bananas and strawberries
